Probably not. Maybe it’s exceptional computer graphics? maybe. Maybe the story behind the game and who wrote it? In this case, too, yes, but not only, and of course, it depends on the type of game. Maybe it’s the length of time it spent at the top of the list of sales? Or the length of time it was even sold? Is money even a topic of discussion? And what does the bus driving simulator OMSI 2 have to do with a discussion about classic games?

And what, exactly, does a bus driving simulator like OMSI 2 have to do with classic games?

Interestingly enough, most of the usual criteria don’t really apply to OMSI 2. The game was released in 2013, received its last major update in 2014, and has largely remained untouched ever since. It is now more than twelve years old, and graphically, it often looks like something developed in the late 1990s. And yet, it caught my attention many years after its release – and a quick visit to Steam shows that, despite its age, it is far from cheap.

A little bit of history

First, a brief history lesson. OMSI was developed by a small German studio called MR-Software GbR, which – if I remember correctly – consisted of just two friends. Their goal was to create a realistic bus driving simulator, not only in terms of driving physics, but especially in the level of detail found in the buses themselves. They succeeded.

The original game focuses on the Spandau district of Berlin, located on the western side of the Wall. It features several real-life bus lines running along authentic streets, but it goes even further than that: the game allows players to move along a historical timeline, showing how the city, the routes, and even the line numbers change before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The stars of the show were buses manufactured by MAN, a company that dominated the German market at the time and remains one of the largest bus manufacturers in the world today. Most of the included vehicles were double-deckers – an iconic sight on Berlin’s streets during that era.

More and more DLC

Since then, the game has received dozens of commercial expansions – many of them released after Aerosoft acquired ownership of OMSI 2.

This is one of the main reasons why I consider OMSI 2 a classic. The base game may be old, but new official expansions continue to arrive, bringing new maps, new cities, and new buses—both old and modern—at a pace of several releases per year.

In fact, I write these lines, again, shortly after the release of OMSI 2 Add-On Thüringer Wald in Steam that brings a new area and new options to the lives of OMSI 2 fans. And it was launched just a month after the launch of OMSI 2 Add-on Downloadpack Vol. 15 – AI Vehicles – these are official DLCs and more is coming almost every month or so.

OMSI 2 around the world

But the real punchline for me is the community that never stops. It continues to produce more and more free maps and buses, not to mention the hypocrisy of buses. According to one of the help sites, more than 250 free maps have already been launched for OMSI 2, along with thousands of bus models from all over the world and almost all over the timeline, at least from the 1950s onwards, and tens if not hundreds of thousands of different paint options for one bus or another, almost as close to the imagination as possible, and not always with a close connection to reality.

Some of the maps offered are realistic, and some are completely invented. At the start, I was looking for realistic maps only, and there are quite a few of them. But there are many more invented ones, and over time, I learned to appreciate them because building something from scratch is sometimes more complex than reproducing streets and buildings.

The forth iteration of Lemmental

Some maps offer a single line or two. Some maps offer dozens of lines. One of them is an expansion of the original map, which offers around 50 routes that travel in Berlin, including the former East side. Crazy.

Over the years, I’ve been exposed mainly to a lot of German, Polish, Russian, and English maps. But learned there is a nice community in Brazil, Turkey, and more. All in all, I’ve also come across maps from Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Finland, the United States, Spain, Latvia, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Serbia, a crazy-sized map from Australia, and there are also some from China, Hong Kong, and quite a few from France.

Installation is part of the experience

Installing free maps can be frustrating – but it’s part of the OMSI 2 experience. Some maps simply refuse to work, often due to missing files or language barriers. Others load but contain broken elements, even when no missing files are reported. In many cases, required assets are no longer available because the projects were abandoned long ago – a familiar issue in any long-running modding community.

But in the end, when I finally manage to get a new map running – I’m more a maps person than the buses themselves – I feel like I’m traveling abroad a bit. Some maps manage to be graphically fascinating, and the transition between cities and villages and along the highway, with views of mountains and seas and rivers crossing, is enjoyable for me.

Some routes can take up to two hours from end to end. Others demand intense concentration just to reach the final stop without an accident. You can drive at night, in rain or snow, and experience how weather and road conditions affect vehicle handling. The selection of buses is enormous – short, long, articulated, double-deckers, and from all over the world.

Even in these days, the community remains active and vocal, urging the publisher not to abandon the game. Many many thousands of players continue to spend countless hours behind a virtual steering wheel – and those hours only keep increasing.

And if these aren’t reasons to define a game as a classic, then I don’t know what is. For me, OMSI 2 is first and most ‘the community bus driving game’ “Mostly. And if you’re a fan of driving games, even with the keyboard, and you tries OMSI 2 before, check out the game. You won’t regret it.

Despite the long time that has passed since launch of OMSI 2, it is still alive, existing and very much alive – or in short: a classic game

[1

post-23","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
